Proficiency Grading
So what is proficiency grading? This is a way of grading students on what they have learned, not on their practice towards mastering that material. In other words, students are graded on tests at the end of each unit, not on homework, labs, and in-class work. The test is aligned with state standards, basically students are tested on what the State of Oregon wants them to learn AND the level at which they are required to learn.
DISREGARD ANY PERCENTAGES YOU MAY SEE ON Synergy!!!!! You want to see "3" and "4" in the grade columns. Anything less means your student is not passing the class. An "E" means exceeds, an "M" is Meets, a "NM" is Nearly Meets, and "BG" is beginning. For the notebook you want to see E and M.

Common questions:
1. My student got an F on a progress report/quarter report card, how do I change this?
Answer: The student has a 3 or lower on one or more of the tests and needs to make up the test as soon as possible. The student will need to have completed test corrections on the original test, have all homework, study guides, labs, and in-class assignments all completed before the student is allowed to retake the test.
2. What if my student doesn't test well or fails the 2nd time around?
Answer: Students have 3 chances to pass the test. If a student is unable to pass the test, then the student and teacher will develop a project that will allow the student to demonstrate proficiency in the area or mastery. Projects will vary depending on unit.
3. I want to get an "A" in the class, how do I do this?
Answer: The student needs to get at least 1/2 of tests as exceeds ("4") in the semester and the rest at "3"-proficient. An example.... 1st semester there are 11 standards tested, students need 5 of those 11 to be "4"s .
Second semester there will be 14 standards, students will need to receive a "4" on at least 7 of the standards. The B range grade will have get a least 3- "4" out of the 14 standards.
4. Does my student have to do homework? Or any other work besides tests?
Answer: Yes, one of the standards is college readiness standards. Students will show they have the skills to be successful in college by having work (all work-homework, labs, in class work, etc) completed and checked off by the teacher. Students will receive feedback on the work in order to correct misconceptions and gain instruction.
